Rox Box is a four CD/ one DVD collection of Roxette’s greatest songs from 1986-2006. To celebrate, this autumn Joyride will be released as a 4-album vinyl and a 3-CD. I don’t know if it’s still in print or not, but if you can find a copy of The Rox Box, I highly recommend it. On Sunday March 28, Swedish group Roxette celebrate the 30th anniversary of their third album Joyride the much anticipated follow-up to the band’s spectacular 1989 global break-through Look Sharp.

She was a dynamic performer with a unforgettable voice that I will greatly miss. So, as I said earlier, I was shocked and saddened to learn of her death yesterday. But I had no idea that the cancer had returned in recent years, especially with the release of Good Karma, which is an amazing album, just three years ago. I knew that Marie Fredriksson had been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor in 2002, and that the tumor was successfully removed.

The more I listen to Good Karma, the more I feel Roxette came full circle back to their heyday of Look Sharp! I also have a CD copy of the band’s original first album Pearls of Passion, which was never released in the USA.

In fact, I have all of them in my collection– on import labels– with the exception of Good Karma, which I have on MP3. The six albums– Crash! Boom! Bang!, Have a Nice Day, Room Service, Charm School, Traveling and Good Karma- were successful in Europe and other parts of the world. And the follow up single, “Fingertips,” failed to chart.Īlthough Roxette released six more albums between 19, all of them failed to resonate with American audiences, aside from diehard fans like myself. The first single, “How Do You Do” charted on the Hot 100, but faltered at #58. Things only got worse when Roxette released the album Tourism in 1992. That success was followed by Roxette’s fourth– and final– #1 single, “Joyride.” The single, from the album of the same title, went to #1 in over 25 countries in early 1991. The single spent two weeks at #1 and two weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1990. The success of Roxette’s first four singles was exceeded by their first single release in 1990: “It Must Have Been Love” from the soundtrack of the hit film Pretty Woman, starring Richard Gere and an up and coming Julia Roberts. The song then began to spread across the States–as EMI execs washed the egg off their faces. A man who was studying in Sweden brought the album back to Minneapolis with him and introduced it to a DJ, who then started playing “The Look,” which quickly caught fire and went into high rotation. The most amazing story I’ve heard about Look Sharp! is that EMI initially rejected the album as unsaleable in the USA.

Look Sharp! was the 45th best selling album of 1989 in the United States. The success of Look Sharp!, which peaked at #23 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart, and it’s four Top 15 singles made a dynamite debut for a band from a country that had previously only seen major international success with ABBA in the 1970s.
